How to Choose your Football Goal

Choosing a football goal seems like a relatively simple task, until you see the millions of different sizes, materials and designs available. Finding the correct size goal is crucial for efficient football training and complying with the FA standards for matches and competitions.

Where to start?

Firstly, ask yourself what you need the goal for. If you want football goalposts for your garden then you are not restricted by the professional guidelines, you can choose a goal that works with both your garden size and the age of the player. A good method of finding which size goal could work with your garden is setting up a goal using garden canes. If you need a goal for a school team, club or academy it’s best to follow the guidelines to ensure you are training with the correct size.

What size do I need?

There are many different sizes available so it’s fundamental that you buy the correct sized goal for the age group, in order to comply with FA standards. Using the right goal encourages more accurate playing and helps improve control, touch and precision.

Here are the FA guidelines:

Age 5-6 years 7-8 years 9-10 years 11-12 years 13+ years
Goal Size 3x2m 12x6ft 12x6ft 16x7ft 24x8ft
Match Type 5-a-side 5-a-side 7-a-side 7-a-side 11-a-side

What type do I need?

There are two main types of goalposts available: socketed or portable.

The FA only endorses socketed football goals for competitions. These goals are permanently fixed into the ground, providing a strong and sturdy goal post. Socketed goals are available in steel and aluminium. Steel tends to be the popular choice as it is more affordable. Aluminium, on the other hand, is lighter and more resistant to rusting.

Portable football goals are perfect for training as they can be easily moved for different drills or games and can be moved off the pitch after the session. UPVC is a great material for training goals as it is lightweight, strong and durable. Freestanding goalposts need to be weighed down during play; this can be done by ground anchors or sandbags.
